Saint Vincent College Supports Legislation to Increase Aid for Middle-Income Families

Saint Vincent College students and staff have joined with other colleges and universities in Pennsylvania to support increased financial aid for middle-income families.

The Middle Income Student Debt Reduction Act (Senate Bill 420 co-sponsored by Senator Kim Ward or House Bill 1213) aims to establish a new educational grant to Pennsylvania students from middle income families ($80,000 to $110,000) who currently do not qualify for other state grants.

Currently, 700 Saint Vincent students receive a total of $2.3 million in aid through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) grants. Passing this legislation would help ensure that another 130 students are able to benefit from this state financial aid. “It will let middle-income families know that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is directly supporting their need to pay college bills and decrease student indebtedness,” noted Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., president. “Saint Vincent supports these bills and efforts by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICUP) to lobby for enactment by the General Assembly.”

Saint Vincent officials encourage Pennsylvania families with income in the middle range to contact their state legislators in support of this legislation.
