The next program in Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve’s Saturday at the Barn Program will feature frontier and military demonstrations at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

The program will include a portrayal of the frontier and military lives by Lochry's Westmoreland Militia, the IBWCP (Independent Battalion, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania).

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn how the homesteaders of Western Pennsylvania banded together to protect the frontier during the American Revolution and the limited equipment the 18th Century frontiersmen carried.

The Barn and Lochry’s Blockhouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program, led by Lochry’s Westmoreland Militia, will begin at 10 a.m. on the Blockhouse lawn.

The historic Lochry Blockhouse was discovered in 1999 by Floyd Eiseman through a conversation with a Saint Vincent College employee, Dennis Gilbert, who knew of the house because it had belonged to his Uncle Anthony Todaro in the 1930s. The discovery of the Blockhouse began a string of events that would eventually allow the Blockhouse to remain at its original site, adjacent to the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve and Saint Vincent College. The Blockhouse timbers were marked for reassembly; it was dismantled and put back together at the original site with as little alteration as possible. Recently added to the Blockhouse property is a Colonial Garden with both vegetables and ornamental plants that would have existed in the Pennsylvania frontier and would have been utilized for cooking or medicines.

Admission is free and open to the public.
