Dr. Thomas W. Cline, professor of marketing at Saint Vincent College’s Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government, reports that his experimental study, “Effects of Advanced Care Discussion in Patient Care Conferences at a Long-Term Care Facility,” has been accepted as a top-ten finalist for the 2013 Fine Award sponsored by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. The top three awards will be presented on Nov. 21. He co-authored the study with Dr. Karen Zagroki of Robert Morris University.

The primary aim of the study was to determine whether advance care planning (ACP) educational training sessions for an interdisciplinary team at a long term care facility would increase physician and multidisciplinary ACP discussion and documentation for residents with high risk mortality.

Secondarily, the study sought to evaluate if advance care discussion at patient care conferences modifies end-of-life preferences – Physician Orders’ for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) – and increases comfort measure orders.

Finally, the study evaluated whether ACP discussion at patient care conferences decreases hospitalizations/emergency room visits and increases hospice consultations with residents with high risk mortality.

A quasi-experimental two-group design was used to pilot a quality improvement initiative with an interdisciplinary team to integrate ACP during patient care conferences in a long term care facility.
