The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Gallery at Saint Vincent College will present a holiday exhibit that allows visitors to experience the history and traditions of Christmas in the 19th century, Christmas in America, from Thursday, Nov. 14 to Saturday, Jan. 10, 2014. An opening reception featuring holiday desserts and season beverages will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Gallery, located on the first floor of the Fred M. Rogers Center will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays, and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The Gallery is closed on Mondays and will be closed on Dec. 24-26. Private tours during all other times are available by appointment.

There will be 24 coverlets on display and an array of whimsical decorations.

“In Colonial America, Christmas decorations were common in both homes and churches,” commented Lauren Churilla, curator. “Holly, mountain laurel, ivy and mistletoe were evergreen, even in the winter. These garlands bedecked the roof, walls, pews and pulpit of colonial churches. Similar decorations were used in select rooms of households. Both homes and churches were scrubbed clean in anticipation of the coming holiday.

The exhibit will include decorated Christmas trees, greeting cards, Santa Claus figures and other vintage- inspired decorations.

The McCarl Coverlet Gallery opened in 2008 and houses the lifetime collection of handmade American Jacquard woven coverlets of the late Foster and Muriel McCarl of Beaver Falls, which were a permanent gift to Saint Vincent College. Public exhibits of selections from the collection are shown throughout the year.
