Sonya Seitz, a Saint Vincent College student in the Teacher Certification Program, had one of her original works of art selected for exhibition in the Smithsonian Institution’s S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C. The juried show, entitled “Momentum,” is for 15 young emerging artists with disabilities and will be displayed through January 22, 2012 before traveling the U.S. for the next two years. She is one of three Pennsylvania artists to be included in the exhibit. Ms. Seitz is a 2009 graduate of IUP where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in studio arts and a minor in art history. She was presented with a $2,000 Award of Excellence by Anna Schneider, vice president of industry-government relations for Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., which sponsored the exhibit and awards in cooperation with Very Special Arts (VSA), The Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian’s Office of Accessibility. Her mixed-media work is titled “Coiled Colon” and includes photographs of her in a hospital gown. A resident of Blairsville, she is a substitute teacher in the Indiana and Cambria County School Districts.
