Saint Vincent College will host the 11th Annual Westmoreland Earth Day on campus in the Robert S. Carey Student Center on Sunday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme for this year’s event is Healthy Earth Recipe.
Participants of all ages will have an opportunity to learn positive environmental stewardship, ways they can lessen their impact on the environment and gain a deeper appreciation of the region’s natural resources and landscapes.
The Westmoreland Earth Day event provides an opportunity for representatives of local environmental organizations to gather and share ideas and information.
Interactive hands-on activities for children, live animals, games and other attractions have made this event popular with families. The first 100 people who attend will receive a free prize for their family.
This year’s event will feature the Zany Umbrella Circus which will present “Stories of the Seasons” at 1 and 4 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center of the Carey Center. The show is comprised of four short circus stories that celebrate the change of the seasons and growth. Zany Umbrella is noted for its interactive performances on the aerial fabric and trapeze, fire juggling, slack rope walking and masks. In addition, a nearly 20-foot-high Earth Balloon will engage visitors of all ages. One of The Learning Lamp's many traveling science programs, this giant sailcloth sphere uses state-of-the-art satellite imagery and education occurs both outside and inside the globe. People will be able to enter the Earth balloon through a zippered doorway at the International Dateline in the Pacific Ocean – a unique perspective of planet Earth.
The event connects area residents with organizations in the environmental field in which they can get involved and become active as volunteers with environmentally-based community programs and activities.
Serving on the planning committee for this year’s event are representatives from Saint Vincent College, Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, Westmoreland Conservation District, Penn State Master Gardeners, Westmoreland Cleanways, Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps, Greater Latrobe School District, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Keystone State Park and Roaring Run Watershed.
Sponsors for the event are the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, Saint Vincent College Office of Campus Life, Commercial Bank and Trust of Pennsylvania, Whole Foods Market and Sendell Motors.
