Saint Vincent College has awarded academic scholarships totaling $208,000 to 13 high school seniors based on their performance on a competitive examination at a Scholarship Day Competition held in January. Each student was awarded $16,000 – $4,000 per year for four years. Some of the scholarships are named in honor of early educators at Saint Vincent who were Benedictine monks of Saint Vincent Archabbey.

Darren P. Anderton – Fr. Maximilian Duman, O.S.B., Scholarship in Biology

Darren P. Anderton of Jeannette is a senior at Penn Trafford High School. Son of James and Claire Anderton, Mr. Anderton has been active in instrumental music where he played the trombone in the marching band and served as assistant drum major. He also participated in varsity swimming, varsity cross country and varsity track and field. A member of the honor roll, he plans to major in biology.

John A. Bonacchi – History Scholarship

John A. Bonacchi of Pittsburgh (15236) is a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School. Son of Bruno and Rosemarie Bonacchi, Mr. Bonacchi participated in varsity football, varsity track and field, musical theater, school newspaper, school television and computer/technology support. Currently enrolled in the Advanced Placement European History Course, he plans to major in history.

John J. Howard – Fr. Bertin L. Emling, O.S.B., Chemistry Scholarship

John J. Howard of Sarver is a senior at Freeport Area High School. Son of John and Susan Howard, Mr. Howard has been active in the marching band and served as president during his senior year. Enrolled in Honors English, he plans to major in chemistry and pursue educational certification.

Hannah L. Loughner – Environmental Science Scholarship

Hannah L. Loughner of Greensburg is a senior at Greensburg Salem High School. Daughter of Donna Loughner, she has been active in marching band, Physics Club and Stage Crew. She has completed accelerated biology, honors chemistry and honors English, and plans to major in environmental science. She has volunteered with the Food Bank and has earned the Girl Scout Silver Award.

Margaret A. Loya – Business Administration Scholarship

Margaret A. Loya of Saint Augustine, Florida, is a home schooled senior taking classes at Saint Johns River State College. Daughter of Gregory and Heather Loya, she has been active as a model and ambassador with Pure Fashion, 4-H Legislature and 4-H Avid Orators and 4-H County Council and Key Club. She plans to major in business administration.

MacKenzie McDowell – Fr. Roland L. Heid, O.S.B., Physics Scholarship

MacKenzie G. McDowell of Ligonier is a senior at Ligonier Valley High School. Daughter of Joseph and Heather McDowell, she has been active as a majorette and majorette captain, orchestra and first chair violin, theatre guild, and SADD. She completed honors physics I and II and plans to major in physics and pursue educational certification.

Nick J. Maxson – Spanish Scholarship

Nick J. Maxson of Greensburg is a senior at Greensburg Salem High School. Son of Roberta Maxson, he participated in varsity soccer, Physics Club, National Honor Society, and Spanish Club. He has completed Advanced Placement Spanish and plans to major in Spanish and pursue educational certification. He also plans to play varsity soccer.

Jillian E. Schweigert – Bioinformatics Scholarship

Jillian E. Schweigert of Blairsville is a senior at Blairsville High School. Daughter of Frank and Beverly Schweigert, she has been active in Girl Scouts, Mini-Jettes, Blairsville Band and is a Feature Parade Twirler. A member of the distinguished or high honor roll, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Remembering Adam, and Young Life. She plays flute in the Concert Band and was invited to County Band last year. She plans to major in bioinformatics.

George T. Shaw – Alex G. McKenna Economic and Policy Scholarship

George T. Shaw of Murrysville is a senior at Franklin Regional Senior High School. Son of George and Patty Shaw, he has earned highest honors with distinction. He has taken nine honors level courses and one AP level course in calculus AB. He plans to major in business.

Aaron E. Stein – Mathematics Scholarship

Aaron E. Stein of New Kensington is a senior at St. Joseph High School, Natrona Heights. Son of Lawrence and Mary Stein, he has been active in church and school services and activities, adult choir, cantoring, Knights of Columbus, Squires, Food Bank, teen, baseball and national history day. He plans to major in Engineering (3/2).

Bridget M. Synan – English Scholarship

Bridget M. Synan of Munhall is a senior at Oakland Catholic High School. Daughter of Robert and Marcia Synan, she has been active in varsity field hockey, newspaper, MAPS and Student Ambassadors. She has been on honor roll for all of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to major in English.

Thomas C. Warner – Theology Scholarship

Thomas C. Warner of East Amherst, New York, is a senior at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. He has been active in the percussion ensemble, Philosophy Club, jazz band, varsity lacrosse, crew team, concert band, food basket collection, swing choir band and the pit band. He has been honored with the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Service Award and the Dennis Szefel Merit Scholarship. He has extensive volunteer experience as a retreat volunteer, mission service volunteer in Nicaragua, St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy Soup Kitchen and Glory Beats Music Ministry. He plans to major in theology.

Julian D. Whalen – Computing and Information Science Scholarship

Julian D. Whalen of New Brighton is a senior at New Brighton Area Senior High School. Son of Dennis and Julie Ann Whalen, he has been active in marching band and served as drum captain. He was also one of the founding members of the percussion ensemble. He plans to major in computing and information science.
