Dr. Robert Michalow of Bentleyville, assistant professor of education in the Saint Vincent College School of Social Sciences, Communication, and Education, was honored with the presentation of the Quentin Schaut Faculty Award at the Saint Vincent College Spring Honors Convocation on April 25 in Saint Vincent Basilica.

The Quentin Schaut Award is named in honor of Fr. Quentin Schaut, O.S.B., a professor of English and the seventh president of the College, and recognizes the contributions, leadership, and achievements of a junior faculty member to the curriculum and life of the College.

Dr. Michalow graduated from Saint Vincent College in 1991 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and minors in chemistry and education. He earned a master of science degree in environmental science and management from Duquesne University, and a Ph.D. in forest resource sciences from West Virginia University. Before joining the faculty at Saint Vincent, Dr. Michalow taught chemistry and environmental science at Sewickley Academy.

Dr. Michalow teaches a variety of courses both in education and environmental science at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

“He is well known for his passionate teaching of those who seek to teach and gives solid advising at all levels of study,” Dr. John Smetanka, vice president for academic affairs, commented in making the presentation. “Student comments offer valuable insight into Dr. Michalow’s classroom. One student wrote, Dr. Michalow exudes enthusiasm for teaching science and motives you to be enthusiastic as well. Another student wrote, that he is driven regarding teaching science using inquiry and this encourages his students to become alive and teach science in this way. In a course for students studying elementary education a student reflected that, Dr. Michalow always had me engaged in class and inspired me to like science when it had always been my least favorite subject in the past.”
