Saint Vincent College Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Daniele Arcara and his wife and six children became an all-American family recently when he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Dr. Arcara, 38, who emigrated to the United States from Italy 15 years ago to earn a doctorate, changed plans after he met the woman who would become his wife, Angela. “Because I have lived here so long as a permanent resident, I already felt like an American,” Dr. Arcara commented, “but it’s comforting to receive the certificate and officially become a dual citizen. I am proud that I will now be able to vote, serve on juries and do other things that other American citizens do. This country is so nice. There are a lot of opportunities.”

Dr. Arcara completed the months-long process on May 18th in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh accompanied by Angela and their six children: Giuseppe, 1, Elena, 3, Chiara, 5, Caterina, 9, and Maria, 11. All of the children are home-schooled and have a family life that is as normal as it can be with that many competing for attention.

Dr. Arcara, who teaches mechanics and calculus, says he enjoys teaching at Saint Vincent. “I like the small campus where I can get to know the students,” he said. “It’s not just faces. I know a lot of the students on campus which is exciting. I also love working at a Catholic college since it is convenient for me to go to Mass in the student chapel every day. The Benedictine character of Saint Vincent shows you how to live a meaningful life.”

An active member of the Saint Vincent faculty, Dr. Arcara is the faculty moderator of the Student Government Association, has served on Faculty Council, Compensation Committee, Budget Committee and the Student-Faculty-Administration-Benedictine Committee. He has also taken classes in theology at Saint Vincent Seminary.

Cooking for a family of eight is a challenge Dr. Arcara leaves to his wife. “Angela does most of the food preparation. We don’t go out much but we do like Steak and Shake and Red Lobster when we do.”

Dr. Arcara was born in Como, Italy, and studied accounting at the Accounting Technical Institute there. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the Universitá di Torino and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Georgia. His research areas are algebraic geometry and moduli spaces.

The Arcaras live in Southwest Greensburg and are members of St. Paul R.C. Church in Greensburg. Dr. Arcara and Angela teach natural family planning for the Diocese of Greensburg.

“I am very happy with my life and with my work,” Dr. Arcara concluded. “I love it and feel blessed to do what I do.”
