Visitors to Saint Vincent College, including the thousands flocking to the 47th annual Pittsburgh Steelers Summer Training Camp, have another reason to smile as they approach the campus since they are being entertained with poetic signs reminiscent of the signs used by Burma-Shave on country roads in the 1920s.

“The signs are just another way to extend our hospitality to visitors to make them feel more welcome,” explained Don Orlando, director of public relations. “The poems were a collaborative effort designed to educate and entertain.”

The use of simple roadside signs was first introduced by the Burma-Shave Co. in 1925. Demand was sparse and the company sought to expand sales by installing advertising signs that were different from what others were doing. Sales took off and the signs were credited with making Burma-Shave the second-highest selling brushless shave cream in the United States. An example of the popular signs that were seen across the country for nearly four decades is this one:

A PEACH LOOKS GOOD
WITH LOTS OF FUZZ
BUT MAN’S NO PEACH
AND NEVER WUZ.
BURMA-SHAVE.

Saint Vincent College has four different series of signs, two along the main entrance drive, and two along the entrance roads into the temporary parking areas used by visitors to Steelers training camp. The signs are similar to the Burma-Shave signs which utilized white printing on a red background. But the College’s signs are made out of corrugated plastic rather than wood.

If you visit the campus this summer, here is what you will read along the way. Two of them are about the Saint Vincent College educational experience and two have football themes:

TAKE YOUR DREAMS
TO WHEREVER THEY ROAM
BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER
WHEN YOU’RE HERE, YOU’RE HOME.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
ALWAYS STARTS HERE
THAT’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
TO STUDY AND CHEER!
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

PASSING AND CATCHING
RUNNING AND KICKIN’
ALL IN A PLACE THAT IS
PURE BENEDICTINE.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

SEVEN RINGS WOULD BE HEAVEN
THERE IS NO DOUBT
THAT’S WHAT SAINT VINCENT
IS ALL ABOUT!

The College welcomes amateur poets to submit rhymes for consideration for future campus signs. They may be sent to pr@stvincent.edu.
