Dr. Molly C. Michelmore, an author and professor of history at Washington and Lee University, will present a lecture entitled, “The Specter of the Welfare Queen: Poverty, Politics and the 2012 Election,” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the Fred M. Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College. Sponsored by the Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts and its department of history, admission is free and open to the public.

A native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Amherst College, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Michelmore is the author of the recently published book, Tax and Spend: The Welfare State, Tax, Politics, and the Limits of American Liberalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012). She has also been published in the Christian Science Monitor, The Richmond Times Dispatch and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, and has been a guest on public and talk radio.

"Dr. Michelmore provides a powerful analysis of the way the language of taxes and rights shapes the modern welfare state,” Kimberly Phillips-Fein, author of Invisible Hands: The Making of the Conservative Movement from the New Deal to Reagan, noted in a review. “Tax and Spend makes a significant argument about the nature of post-war liberalism through an examination of issues that have generally not been treated together."

"Tax and Spend connects two arenas of policy history that stand apart to the detriment of both: the history of fiscal policy and that of social assistance,” commented Eileen Boris of the University of California, Santa Barbara. “It traces the complicity of liberalism in our anti-tax regime. This most important book has the potential to transform how we think about the historical origins of the current crisis of the welfare state.”
