Saint Vincent College named five freshmen as Fred Rogers Scholars at the second annual induction ceremony at the Fred M. Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College on October 23.
As a Fred Rogers Scholar, each student will receive a renewable $2,500 scholarship and opportunities to network with scholars and industry leaders in early learning and children’s media. The Scholars Program, designed for students interested in pursuing careers involving children, early learning and media for young children, will introduce the students to the Fred Rogers Archive and its research capabilities, encourage them to participate in regional and national internships, work on service-learning projects, develop a senior research project and have the opportunity to travel to local and national centers of research and media outlets.

Bartko, a mathematics/sociology interest from McKeesport; Vincent M. Centore, a biochemistry major from Canonsburg; Lauren E. Harbaugh, a biochemistry major from Canonsburg; Joni L. Mulvaney, an art education major from Gibsonia; and Helena Shoplik, a psychology major from Pittsburgh (15228).
A reception and dinner for the new inductees and their parents and senior Fred Rogers Scholars was hosted by the Rt. Rev. Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., archabbot and chancellor, and Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., president.
Dr. Melissa A. Cook, associate professor of communication and director of the Fred Rogers Scholars Program, served as mistress of ceremonies for the induction program. The main speaker was Mr. William Isler, president and chief executive officer of the Fred Rogers Company.
Closing prayer was given by Dr. Mary Beth Spore, dean of the Saint Vincent College School of Social Sciences, Communication and Education.
