Christopher Ruane of Murrysville has been named first prize winner with his digital photograph entitled “The Good Samaritan” in the Fourth Nationwide Juried Catholic Arts Competition which is being exhibited in a multimedia show of religious-themed art at The Saint Vincent Gallery at Saint Vincent College. He receives a cash prize of $1,000.
Second prize of $750 was awarded to Matthew James Collins of Oak Park, Illinois, for his oil on linen, “Jesus Carrying the Cross.” Third prize of $500 went to James Parsons Duncker of Alexandria, Virginia, a cast stone, “Jesus.”
Four honorable mention prizes of $250 each were awarded to Neilson Carlin of Kennett Square for his oil on canvas, “Ordinatio,” Jacek Tuszynski of Chicago, Illinois, for his oil on canvas, “The Meaning of Sacrifice,” Henry Wingate of Front Royal, Virginia, for his oil on canvas, “Madonna and Child,” and John Robert Del Monte of Bethel Park for his mixed media piece, “San Martino and the Beggar.
A total of 35 works by artists from nine states are included in the unique show in which artists worked in mixed media, stainless steel and bronze, oil, acrylic, photography, stained glass, watercolor, cast stone, plaster and others.
The exhibition will be available for viewing in the gallery on the third floor of the Robert S. Carey Student Center until Sunday, December 9. Gallery hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays, and November 21-25 for Thanksgiving break. Admission is free and open to the public.
The juror for the exhibition was Dr. John T. Spike, an expert in Renaissance, Baroque and Contemporary Art. He is the author of more than 25 critically-acclaimed books and exhibition catalogs, many of which have been translated into multiple languages.
This is the fourth juried Catholic arts exhibition which seeks to foster the arts of the Western Christian tradition although other artistic traditions of Christian subject matter are also considered.
Other artists represented in the exhibition include Zach Brown, Amy DiMichele, Joshua Flynn, Carl Fougerousse, Rev. John B. Giuliani, Fred del Guidice, Jordan Hainsey, George Kollar, Daniel Jimick, James Langley, Edie Schutte Martin, Carol Molchen, Harry Molchen, Nicholas Parrendo, David and Suzann Miriello, Janet McKenzie, Steven Sadvary and Guy Zins.
Cash prize-winners totaling $3,250 were announced following a Threshold Series lecture by the juror, Dr. John Spike, on November 2. A People’s Choice prize of $250 based on voting by visitors and will be awarded at the end of the exhibition.
