Saint Vincent College’s Loe China Studies Center will host a Chinese New Year celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 in the student lounge of the Robert S. Carey Student Center featuring performances, cultural activities and foods. Admission is free and open to the public.
The celebration will include three sections. The first, from 6 to 6:30 p.m., will be an opportunity to taste and enjoy authentic Chinese foods. The second section, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., will feature performances including a Chinese long sleeve dance, ethnic group dance show, Chinese traditional operas, Chinese fashion Qipao show and student performances. Cultural activities including dumpling making, paper cutting, Chinese knot, Peking Opera mask painting, get a Chinese name and a chopstick competition will comprise the third section from 8 to 9 p.m.
Local elementary and middle school students from throughout Westmoreland County who are engaged in Chinese language and culture programs will join Saint Vincent College students and Chinese teachers from Wuhan University in the performances and activities.
The event is being coordinated by Dr. Tingting Guo, visiting professor and Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Pittsburgh; Dr. Huili Zheng, assistant professor of Chinese; and Dr. Tina Philips Johnson, associate professor of history and director of Chinese studies at Saint Vincent College.
