Thomas Octave, assistant professor and chair of the Saint Vincent College music department in the school of humanities and fine arts, announced that the department will be hosting a visit by international opera singer Luana DeVol on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10.
DeVol will speak to all music students on April 9 at 5:30 p.m. in room 31 of the Robert S. Carey Student Center about the business of singing and having a career as a singer.
She will give a class on posture and breathing from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m in room 31 on April 10 and will also be available to talk with students individually after her two presentations.
DeVol was born in California and is now a resident of Henderson, Nevada. She is semi-retired after a 25-year career singing in Europe. After serving three years in Aachen and four years in Mannheim as a member of those theaters’ ensembles, she became a freelance artist and has sung in virtually all opera houses in the major cities of Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France, and has also appeared as a guest in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Buenos Aires and Abu Dhabi, the latter in October 2008.
Her debut at La Scala was made as Fidelio under the baton of Lorin Maazel, which was followed by the Dyer’s wife in Strauss’ Die Frau Ohne Schatten under the baton of Guiseppe Sinopoli. Her Bruennhilde in Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle was heard at the Bayreuth Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and, in 2000, in a new production in Stuttgart which garnered many accolades including that of Singer of the Year.
In June 2010, she appeared as the Dyer’s Wife at the Richard Strauss Festival. The singer joined the faculty of University of Nevada at Las Vegas in the fall of 2008 teaching voice and opera workshop and teaches privately at home. She has given master classes for West Bay Opera since 2004, for the International Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera since 2010, and 2012 in Aachen, Germany among others.
