Marketing Professor Receives National Teaching Excellence Award

Dr. Dawn Edmiston, associate professor of management and marketing at Saint Vincent College’s Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government, has been named the recipient of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Teaching Excellence Award in region 2.

ACBSP recognizes individuals annually from each of its 10 regions who exemplify teaching excellence in the classroom.

Edmiston will be honored, along with other regional recipients, at the 2013 ACBSP annual conference, June 21-24 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and will receive a medallion and a monetary prize.

Two International Teaching Excellence Award recipients will be announced at a special Salute to Regions luncheon, one from a baccalaureate/graduate degree-granting institution and one from an associate degree-granting institution. As a regional recipient, Edmiston is now a candidate for the international award.

“Our course evaluation system enables us to compare our faculty scores to 6,700 other school averages, and Edmiston had the highest rank relative to instructor effectiveness. Her teaching evaluation scores are among the best I recall of any McKenna School business faculty member…She is truly a gifted lecturer and professor,” commented Dr. Gary M. Quinlivan, dean of the McKenna School.

The Associate Degree Commission of ACBSP established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate/graduate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized accrediting body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching, open to application by the entire membership.

“It is more important than ever for business programs to produce graduates who are ready to enter the global marketplace,” said Douglas Viehland, ACBSP executive director. “ACBSP has a mission to develop, promote and recognize best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education. Recognition of teaching excellence is one way we achieve this goal,” he stated. ACBSP currently has more than 1,171 member campuses in 52 countries and 10 regions.

At Saint Vincent, Dr. Edmiston teaches internet and global marketing courses. In addition, she serves as a marketing consultant to the Fred Rogers Center. Her research has been featured in the International Journal of Educational Advancement, Journal of Marketing for Higher Education and publications of the American Marketing Association and Marketing Management Association. She received the 2011 Marketing Management Association AxcessCapon Teaching Innovation Award and the 2012 Middle Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Innovation in Teaching Prize.

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Edmiston held marketing management roles with IBM Business Consulting Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consulting Services, and Discovery Communications (Discovery Channel, TLC, Travel Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel Online).

Her educational background includes a doctorate from University of Maryland University College, an MBA from Columbia University and a BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is also an alumna of the international exchange programme at London Business School.
