Dr. Elaine Bennett, assistant professor of anthropology in the Saint Vincent College School of Social Sciences, Communication and Education, was honored with the presentation of the Quentin Schaut Faculty Award at the Saint Vincent College Spring Honors Convocation on April 24 in Saint Vincent Basilica.

The Quentin Schaut Award is named in honor of Fr. Quentin Schaut, O.S.B., a professor of English and the seventh president of the College, and recognizes the contributions, leadership, and achievements of a junior faculty member to the curriculum and life of the College.

Bennett graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology and philosophy. She earned masters degrees in public health from Southern Connecticut State University and in anthropology from the University of Connecticut, and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Connecticut.

Bennett’s research work combines her expertise in public health and anthropology and her passion to help those in need. Her fieldwork in Santa Cruz la Laguna, Guatemala, centers on improving mothers’ feeding of children. Her work has already demonstrated successful improvements in nutrition and health.

Bennett joined the full-time faculty in the spring of 2010 and has quickly become a leader – spearheading the selection and implementation of the new online course evaluation system. Further, she has been a model for incorporating service learning into her applied anthropology course.

Bennett teaches a variety of courses including both introductory courses and advanced courses such as medical anthropology, anthropology and world art and archeology. She is a demanding instructor who carefully plans each course and each lesson to get the most from her students.

“Dr. Bennett is Saint Vincent’s version of Indiana Jones,” commented Dr. John Smetanka, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean. “Instead of collecting antiquities for museums, she travels to remote locations and uses her expertise to improve the health of those most in need. We are blessed to have her among us and to honor her inspired teaching, her impactful scholarly work and outstanding service to Saint Vincent College.”
