Olivia Sharkey Named 2013 Winner of SVC President's Award

Olivia Sharkey, a theology major with a minor in Spanish from Philadelphia, has been named the 39th annual winner of the President’s Award, Saint Vincent College’s highest student honor, presented to the member of the graduating class who best embodies what the Catholic Benedictine, liberal arts college values in its students – outstanding academic achievement, student leadership and community service.

College President Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., presented the award at the spring Honors Convocation on April 24 in the Basilica.

Sharkey will join the Jesuit Volunteer Corps to teach theology and work as service program coordinator at Christ the King Cristo Rey High School in Newark after she graduates.

She has made numerous service learning trips including Taiwan/China, Nicaragua and Guatemala. She is the founder of The Banana Project, a campus endeavor that seeks to establish a nutritional program at Francisco Coll Elementary School in Guatemala, where Saint Vincent students and faculty have served for the past four years during the annual mission to Guatemala.

Active in student government, she has been a senator for four years, was elected class president during her freshman year and served as a member of the Student Faculty Administration Benedictine Committee, Educational Policies Committee and chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. She has been a prefect for three years and is active with campus ministry where she serves as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.

A member of the dean’s list, she has been named to Who’s Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities twice, is a member of Alpha Chi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Sigma Iota and Theta Alpha Kappa. She is a catechist at St. Benedict Parish in Marguerite, volunteer with International Samaritan, tutor for the department of theology, office assistant in the Seminary development office and a note-taker for the academic affairs office. She has also worked as a camp counselor with Boys and Girls of America.

Sharkey is the daughter of Timothy and Ramona Sharkey of Philadelphia and graduated from Nazareth Academy High School in Philadelphia in 2009. Her home parish is St. Dominic’s in Philadelphia.
