Opportunity Program Gets Crossroads Award

Saint Vincent College’s Opportunity program received the inaugural Crossroads Foundation Award for Excellence in Advancing Educational Attainment during a dinner and program held on April 24 at the LeMont Restaurant, Pittsburgh. Sr. Sandy Kiefer, CSJ, left, director of academics support services for the Crossroads Foundation commended Saint Vincent College and the Opportunity staff for their continued contribution to the Crossroads Program. Executive Director Florence Rouzier made the presentation to, from left, Courtney Rickard of Pittsburgh (15214), a former Crossroads Scholar who is now a sophomore majoring in criminology, law and society at Saint Vincent; and staff members of the Saint Vincent Opportunity SVC/Act 101 and Student Support Services program (SSS-TRIO) Peggy Smith, tutorial coordinator and academic advisor; Dr. Nancy Rottler, director; Linda Painter, secretary; and Theresa Torisky, academic advisor. Crossroads provides promising youth with a quality Catholic high school education by nurturing their academic and personal growth so they will succeed in college and in life. Saint Vincent College has been collaborating with the Crossroads Foundation for 24 years by organizing and implementing a one-week, residential summer program for rising sophomores that includes field trips and motivational lectures. Twenty-four Crossroads Scholars have graduated from Saint Vincent during that time and six scholars are currently enrolled.
