Fire and Ice: The Saint Vincent Fire of 1963, a documentary about the Saint Vincent fire of 1963, has been awarded a Bronze Telly Award in the history and biography category of the 34th annual Telly Awards, a national competition that honors excellence in film and video productions.

The video was edited by David Safin of Manor, director of multimedia services and instructor in communication at Saint Vincent. Safin, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication from Saint Vincent College in 2000, a master of science degree in multimedia technology at California University of Pennsylvania and will finish a master of fine arts in film and digital technology at Chatham University in August.

Safin worked closely with Jerome and Albert Oetgen, who wrote the script for the video, and with Kim Metzgar and Jordan Hainsey from Saint Vincent Archabbey Public Relations, who gathered much of the material featured within.

The Telly Awards competition is administered by the Silver Telly Council comprised of top industry professionals who are past winners of a Silver Telly, the group’s highest honor. More than 13,000 entries are received annually from advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable companies, interactive agencies and corporations. The Telly Award statuette is produced by the same company that makes the Oscar and Emmy awards.

Fire and Ice includes original film footage, archival photos and narrative accounts by those who lived through the major fire that destroyed much of the Saint Vincent campus in 1963 and the subsequent rebuilding. The work was produced in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the blaze.

The video is available for purchase online from Saint Vincent Archabbey Publications at www.stvincentstore.com. In addition to the documentary, the DVD also includes remarks by Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B., college president; the entire raw footage of the fire from which the documentary was produced; and clips from the event held at Saint Vincent in January of 2013 honoring Fire Chiefs Ed Hutchinson of Greensburg and Earl Dalton of Latrobe, and the firemen who fought the blaze. A preview is posted online at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGZK8NA6a1w. A book on the fire, entitled Fire and Ice, published in 2013, is also available online.
