An exhibition of paintings by artist Zach Brown entitled “Saints, Angels, Omens and Masked Men,” will be shown at The Saint Vincent Gallery from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 6.

The exhibition will open with a reception in the Gallery from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.

The exhibition will feature paintings by Mars native Zach Brown and draws upon his experiences having been raised in a rural western Pennsylvania Catholic family.

“Growing up between church and nature,” he said, “I was able to experience a slower pace of life where I tried to resolve religious ideas of the eternal with the physical.”

His works reference ancient mythology and religious imagery to “address the contrast between the physical and the metaphysical by pairing figurative painting with flat areas of formal design.” His subjects are figurative, both human and animal, and focus on religious, philosophical and secular questions of being.

Brown's works are characterized by their use of gold, silver and copper leaf. From their simple use as grounding to a more complex role where they become solidified objects within the composition, these gilded surfaces give way to stunning figural works in oil whose beauty and elegance are only surmounted by their size and scale. A centerpiece of the show will be his Archangel Michael, a triptych measuring 18 feet wide.

Brown, 25, first studied art in Carnegie Mellon University’s Pre-College Saturday Art Program and earned a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has just completed his MFA in painting at the New York Academy of Art.

His work has been included in two Three Rivers Art Exhibitions (2011 and 2012), and has been featured in two recent Saint Vincent Gallery exhibitions: 2x20 invitational exhibition of regional artists in 2011, and the Fourth Nationwide Juried Catholic Arts Exhibition in 2012, where he earned the prestigious People's Choice Award. In the fall of 2013 Brown will join Saint Vincent College as an adjunct professor in the Department of Visual Arts where he will teach drawing.

The gallery is on the campus of Saint Vincent College and located on the third floor of the Robert S. Carey Student Center. The exhibit runs from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 6, and is open during regular gallery hours of 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays. Admission is free and open to the public.
