A classroom at the THRIVE Academy in Newark, New Jersey, has been named “Saint Vincent College” in honor of John Joseph, a member of the SVC graduating class of 2014 who previously attended and graduated from the school.

Adam Rice and co-teacher, Alayna Camp, kindergarten teachers at THRIVE Academy, a part of KIPP, the Knowledge is Power Program, a national network of high performing public charter schools that operate in underserved communities, recently notified the college of the decision. Their mission is to support scholars from kindergarten to and through college.

Traditionally, all classrooms in KIPP schools are named after colleges, usually the alma mater of the teacher in each classroom. However, at THRIVE Academy, they decided to name their classrooms in honor of students who previously attended and graduated from KIPP schools in Newark and who are currently living KIPP values in college.

They selected four students – based on their success in school, admirable character and perseverance – to serve as role models for their kindergarten scholars. Joseph, a member of the class of 2014 at Saint Vincent College, was one of four students selected for this honor.

The classroom at THRIVE Academy was named Saint Vincent College in honor of Joseph. As the classroom role model last year, Joseph wrote letters to kindergarten scholars, visited the classroom throughout the school year to share his experiences and was a source of support and inspiration for the school’s students. They reported that they are thrilled to have John – and Saint Vincent College – as integral parts of our classroom again this year for our new kindergarten class of 2026.

“All scholars at THRIVE know that they are climbing the mountain to and through college every day,” Rice and Camp noted. “The Bearcats in our classroom took ownership of SVC as their college from day one. They are truly proud to be Saint Vincent College Bearcats.”
