Because of her dedication to her students, both inside and outside of the classroom, Dr. Melissa A. Cook, associate professor of communication at Saint Vincent College, was awarded the Harvey Kelly Excellence in Teaching Award from the Pennsylvania Communication Association during the 74th annual conference in Erie on Oct. 18-19.
Dr. Janie M. Harden Fritz, professor of communication and rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University and secretary of the PCA, nominated Dr. Cook for the award. Fritz offered remarks during the banquet and awards ceremony, noting that Cook has, “prepared her students to present their original research at conventions and they have been exceptional students.” Fritz also noted that Cook “mentors colleagues on the aspects of teaching and is an excellent role model.”
Now in her 15th year of teaching, Cook is also chair of the department of communication at Saint Vincent. She offers courses in communication ethics, advertising campaigns and interpersonal/organizational communication. Her research has developed to also include political communication.
Cook is very involved in service to the academy and has consistently offered her time as an administrator, having served as president of PCA in 2008. She is the current chair of the communication ethics division of the National Communication Association. “It is important to work with our colleagues across the state and country to ensure that we are engaged in each other’s research and understand the nuances and challenges we face in the changing world of communicative technologies,” she explained.
The award recognizes a PCA member who has demonstrated a passion for and a mastery of teaching and demonstrated impact. The PCA is one of the oldest state organizations in the country.
