Saint Vincent College sophomore business-accounting major Michael F. Nolan of Bellevue has been declared the winner of a write-in campaign for the office of borough auditor in the recent municipal general election.
Nolan, who turned 20 on Nov. 12, said that he decided to run for the office for the experience it would provide when his father, Joseph Nolan, tax collector in Bellevue, informed him during a visit home that no one was running for the position. “I can utilize my experience and education at Saint Vincent to benefit my community,” he noted. “As an Eagle Scout, I have shown my commitment to Bellevue through hours of community service. I plan to ensure the accuracy of Bellevue’s financial records.” He met the position qualifications which were that he be a citizen of Bellevue for three years and be over the age of 18.
“Two other people also decided to run write-in campaigns,” Nolan reported, “but I decided to run my entire campaign on the social media site, Facebook. I won with 43 votes after having garnered 67 likes on Facebook. Eighty-five people participated in the election.”
The post is one of three local auditors and is a paid position that requires service about ten days per year.
The son of Joseph and Susan Nolan of Bellevue, Nolan was homeschooled. An Eagle Scout, he was a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus and worked for his father at the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.
At Saint Vincent he is active as a member in the Pizza and Politics Club, president of the Strategic Gaming Society, sergeant-at-arms of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and a recorder in the Saint Vincent chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He is also an altar server in the Mary, Mother of Wisdom Student Chapel for campus ministry.
After he completes his education at Saint Vincent, he plans to work in business and continue service in local public service.
He is a member of Assumption Roman Catholic Parish in Bellevue.
Bellevue is a borough, incorporated in 1867, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, along the Ohio River, adjoining Pittsburgh. The population was 8,370 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Northgate School District.
