Camerata Receives State, National Grants

Saint Vincent Camerata performed two all-Bach concerts on Dec. 7 and 8, in the Saint Vincent Basilica, Latrobe and at Sacred Heart Church in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. In support of these concerts the Camerata received two grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. The grants are administered locally by the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance and the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.

The Camerata's next performances will be its spring concert on the weekend of Palm Sunday and will include the 20th century choral masterpiece "Te Deum" by Arvo Pärt, as well as two classics of the Baroque: the "Stabat Mater" of Marc-Antoine Charpentier and the "Credo" of Antonio Vivaldi.

The concert will include the Academy Chamber Orchestra and will take place Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at St. Bernard's Church in Mt. Lebanon, and on Sunday, April 13, at 2:30 p.m. in the Saint Vincent Basilica.

Members of the Camerata include students of Saint Vincent College and vocalists from the local communities.

Soprano vocalists include Margie Barish of Greensburg; Suzy Briggs of Ligonier; Emily Fisher, a junior physical therapy major of Monroeville; Joanne Gaul of Derry; Julia Hlavacik, a sophomore psychology major of York; Jessica Kissel, a sophomore English major of Latrobe; Cynthia Molitor of Greensburg; Philomena Parrish of Bolivar; Julie Pomerleau of Jeannette; Barbara Rozik of Unity Township; Carolyn Smith, a senior music performance major of Houston; Kayla Uveges, a freshman biology major of Cresson; Mary Vanden Berk, a Saint Vincent student of Latrobe; and Theresa Vanden Berk of Latrobe.

Altos include Bobbi Borgo of Greensburg; Casey Ciocco, a senior criminology, law and society major of Latrobe; Mary Alice Connor Taylor of Unity Township; Cindy Lou Fiorina of Latrobe; Anna Hubbel, a senior communication major of Rochester, N.Y.; Elisabeth Karnes of Washington; Maria Lang, a junior studio arts major of DuBois; Dee Mazurek of Bradenville; Jean Pistentis of Greensburg; and Lori Valero of Jeannette.

Tenors members are Matthew Elam, a senior English major of Greensburg; Paul Fox of Latrobe; Fabian Gruber of Metten, Germany; Joel Kankiewicz, a freshman music performance major of Mountain Top; James Materkowski of Latrobe; and John Szalewicz of Greensburg.

Basses are Mike Chovanec of Mt. Pleasant; Thomas E. Hankinson of New Alexandria; Jonathon Jacobeen, a senior philosophy major of Manassus,Va.; John Meyerhofer, a sophomore chemistry major of Leesburg, Va.; Gabriel Pellathy of Unity Township; and Mike Simoncelli of Greensburg.

Fr. Stephen Concordia, O.S.B., assistant professor of music and director of programs in sacred music, is the director.
