Saint Vincent College’s Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing announced that five $5,000 annual STEP scholarships will be offered to students who are interested in a career in an interdisciplinary science.

The scholarships will be offered to students who begin study as freshmen in the fall at Saint Vincent with a major in bioinformatics or biochemistry or a minor in biotechnology.

The scholarships are part of a national initiative, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP), to encourage global competitiveness in the sciences.

The STEP scholarships will be in addition to Saint Vincent’s generous merit awards which range up to $20,000 per year depending on academic record and test scores.

Interested applicants must apply for admission to Saint Vincent and after acceptance submit a 1,000-word essay describing why they want to study bioinformatics, biochemistry or biotechnology and how their chosen field will assist them in achieving their future career goals. Applicants must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Scholarship selection will be based on academic performance and scholarship essay. Financial need will also be taken into consideration.

Students who accept the scholarships will be required to participate in Saint Vincent College’s Collaborative Learning Program (CLP) during their freshman and sophomore years in order to receive supplemental instruction in the rigorous courses of these majors. Recipients must also maintain a 3.0 grade point average or demonstrate satisfactory academic progress throughout their undergraduate career and graduate with a major in bioinformatics or biochemistry or a minor in biotechnology.

The Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing is situated in the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion, a $39 million, state-of-the-art educational facility that provides classrooms, laboratories, offices and informal study areas where Saint Vincent students and faculty can do science together – to facilitate significant interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary programming and promote informal interactions between and among the faculty and students.

Applications for admission to Saint Vincent are available online at www.stvincent.edu or from the Office of Admission, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650-2690, phone 724-805-2500, admission@stvincent.edu.
