Saint Vincent College’s Loe China Studies Center will host a Chinese New Year celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 in the student lounge of the Robert S. Carey Student Center featuring performances, cultural activities and foods. Admission is free and open to the public.
The celebration will include performances of classical fan dances, an ethnic dance show, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese songs and tongue twisters. Cultural stations include a Chinese tea ceremony, one-minute Chinese painting, making Chinese rice balls and a chopsticks competition. All participants will receive free Chinese food and gifts.
Local elementary and middle school students from throughout Westmoreland County who are engaged in Chinese language and culture programs will join Saint Vincent College students and Chinese teachers in the performances and activities.
The event is being coordinated by Dr. Tingting Guo, visiting professor and Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Pittsburgh; Dr. Huili Zheng, assistant professor of Chinese; and Dr. Tina Phillips Johnson, associate professor of history and director of Chinese studies at Saint Vincent College.
