SVC to Host 30th Annual Event for Special Guests March 23

Saint Vincent College students will host a special event, Sports Friendship Day, Sunday, March 23, for persons with special needs, intellectual disabilities or physical limitations.

Sports Friendship Day, sponsored by Saint Vincent College Campus Ministry, is designed for children as young as seven years of age to adults. The special day features light sports activities, arts and crafts, entertainment, a talent show, dinner and Mass. Saint Vincent College students assist each participant throughout the afternoon.

This is the 30th consecutive year that Saint Vincent has hosted this special event that is made possible by the generosity of the entire Saint Vincent College community, especially the Saint Vincent College Student Government Association. Parents and guardians of participants are welcome to attend and enjoy the campus.

More than 150 Saint Vincent students volunteer to be “buddies” to the special guests and assist them with crafts, athletic contests and campus hospitality.

Student leaders who are organizing the event include: Kelsey Farrand, a junior sociology major from Orland Park, Ill., registration coordinator; Tanner Beal, a senior criminology law and society major from Hagerstown, Md., sports activities coordinator; Samantha Pashel, a senior education major from Pittsburgh (15203), crafts coordinator; and Emily Rosati, a senior English major from Oakdale, pep rally and talent show coordinator.

Other members of the planning committee include Sarah Ank, a sophomore sociology major from Elizabeth; Mary Brady, a junior chemistry major from Arona; Caitlyn Gess, a sophomore education major from Jeannette; Hannah Kahn, a sophomore middle grade education and mathematics major from Sewickley; Abigail Kubus, a junior management major from Pittsburgh (15243); Peter Reiter, a freshman accounting major from Hagerstown, Md.; Scott Schramm, a junior marketing major from Pittsburgh (15239); and Amanda Slowey, a senior music major from Bethel Park.

Priests and sisters who have supported the program over the past three decades are being invited back to assist with the popular program they helped perpetuate including Fr. Stephen Honeygosky, Fr. Earl Henry, O.S.B., and Sr. Roberta Campbell, O.S.B.

Lauren Donahue, assistant director of campus ministry for social outreach, said "We at Saint Vincent College are extremely proud to celebrate this very important event that has become a yearly tradition here, the annual Sports Friendship Day. This year's event will bring together student volunteers and members from the community for an exciting day filled with fun activities. This event never fails to showcase Saint Vincent College's hospitality and willingness to be involved in our community, and we are anxiously looking forward to another successful event this year."
