Dr. Jason King, associate professor and chair of the theology department in the Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts, and author Donna Freitas will speak at the University of Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2. Their presentation is entitled, “Faith with Benefits in the Age of Hooking Up, Hanging Out, Talking and Getting Together.”

Drawing from their experience and research with college students, King and Freitas will offer resources from within the Catholic tradition to help students form relationships that are healthy, faithful and fulfilling.

The presentation is also designed for professionals who are concerned with how students talk about and have relationships in a culture where sexuality is the same as sex and commitment and intimacy are not priorities.

As former student affairs administrators, King and Freitas will discuss how students are not happy with a hook up culture but see no way out. They will provide ways to engage students on these topics and offer what the Catholic church teaches about relationships from a social justice perspective.

King is the author of “Marriage and the Redemption of the World” in Finding Salvation in Christ (Wipf & Stock, 2010), “A Theology of Dating for a Culture of Abuse” in Leaving and Coming Home: New Wineskins for Catholic Sexual Ethics (Cascade Books, 2010), and (with Freitas) Save the Date: A Spirituality of Dating, Love, Dinner and the Divine (Crossroads, 2003). He has also published essays in the American Benedictine Review, Religious Education, New Blackfriars, Josephinum Journal of Theology, Journal of Ecumenical Studies and Horizons. He is a regular blogger at CatholicMoralTheology.com.

Freitas has written many books, both nonfiction and fiction. She is the author of Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance and Religion on America's College Campuses, published by Oxford University Press in 2008. Her follow up title, The End of Sex, was published by Basic Books this past April. She has written for national newspapers and magazines including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Newsweek and has appeared on NPR, the Today Show and other news media outlets. A former member of the faculties at Boston University and Hofstra University, she is also a former student affairs administrator at Georgetown University and New York University.---Photo: Dr. Jason King---Follow us on Twitter: @MySaintVincent
