Two History Majors Present Research at Forum

Two Saint Vincent College history majors presented papers based on original research at the Western Pennsylvania Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Slippery Rock University on March 29. Sean Malone, a senior history major from Allison Park, spoke on “Bob Gibson, Our Nation Turns its Lonely Eyes to You: An Examination of the Continuing Effects of Race in Baseball.” Pamela Curtin, a senior history major from Latrobe, gave a presentation that was titled “The Gift of Time: A History of Bird Banding at Powdermill Nature Reserve.” Both Malone and Curtin won “best in panel” prizes.

Other SVC students attending the conference included: Sean Merritt, a junior history major from Greensburg; Victoria Copenheaver, a freshman history major from Pittsburgh (15234); Adam Burgh, a freshman history education major from Lawrence; Jessica Miller, a junior history major from Latrobe; Kailey Dunmire, a sophomore history major from Zelienople; Jake Murtaugh, a junior history major from Holmdel, N.J.; Emily Davis, a sophomore history major from Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; Jennifer Knoch, a junior history major from Tarentum; Bo Bowser, a junior history education major from Kittanning; Susan Costantini, a senior history major from Steubenville, Ohio; Ben Daghir, a junior history education major from St. Marys; Elisabeth Karnes, a junior history education major from Washington; Jacob Boros, a sophomore history major from Big Prairie, Ohio; Kyli Stoner, a sophomore history major from Dunbar; and Cameron Smith, a junior history major from Kittanning.

Dr. Susan Mitchell Sommers, professor of history, accompanied the SVC representatives to the conference and moderated two panels.

Dr. Karen Kehoe, associate professor of history, is moderator of the Saint Vincent College XI Nu chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.
