Alexander Schwartz, a junior engineering science major at Saint Vincent College from Squirrel Hill, has been awarded two prestigious scholarships that will enable him to study at St. Mary’s University College in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during the fall semester.
The Irish American Scholars Program, a highly competitive scholarship, will provide Schwartz with a tuition-free opportunity to study for a full semester at St. Mary’s which specializes in liberal arts and teacher training and is integrated into the larger Queen’s University system. In 2011, St. Mary’s was ranked third among all universities in the United Kingdom for student satisfaction with their overall university experience.
In addition, Schwartz, because of his participation in the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, was awarded a $1,000 James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship, a special award that is made to only 15 students in the U.S. each year. Schwartz will use this scholarship to fund his transportation costs. “We are proud to note that Alexander is the second Saint Vincent student to win this scholarship following the award to Christopher (Cody) Clements for study in India last year,” commented Sara M. Hart, director of study abroad at Saint Vincent.
“I am honored to win these scholarships which will enable me to achieve my educational goals of traveling abroad to see the world,” Schwartz commented. “I also want to study history while I am there in order to learn from the perspective of another culture and to make some global connections which will likely help me throughout my career as an engineer.”
The Irish American Scholars Program is sponsored in part by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities in cooperation with St. Mary’s University College and in association with Study USA of Northern Ireland.
Schwartz, 19, is the son of Alan Schwartz of Morningside and Kimberly Schwartz of Churchview, both in Allegheny County.
A dean’s list student at Saint Vincent, Schwartz is active in Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, member of the Mythopoeic Society and a member of the Radio Club. He is the recipient of a leadership scholarship and a Parson Scholarship.
He is currently serving an internship at Heat Siphon in Latrobe. He also works part time at Al’s Commercial Refrigeration in Pittsburgh. He has previously worked as a counselor at Walnut Grove Christian Daycare and as a counselor for Junior Achievement.
He is a 2012 graduate of Serra Catholic High School, McKeesport.
