Tanner Beal, a double major in politics and criminology, law and society from Hagerstown, Md., has been named the 40th annual winner of the President’s Award, Saint Vincent College’s highest student honor, presented to the member of the graduating class who best embodies what the Catholic Benedictine, liberal arts college values in its students – outstanding academic achievement, student leadership and community service.
College President Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., presented the award at the spring Honors Convocation on April 23 in the Basilica.
“Because of his outstanding academic performance, for being one of those rare students who goes beyond the assigned material and pushes himself to a higher standard in terms of the depth and quality of his work, for his record of leadership as an SGA officer and captain of the swim team, for creating and energizing an organization for criminology majors, for his attitude of service to others before self and for his many positive and genuine characteristics exemplifying the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts values of Saint Vincent College, it is my honor as president of Saint Vincent College to confer upon Tanner C. Beal the President’s Award,” Br. Norman read from the citation in making the announcement.
Beal has served students of Saint Vincent as vice president of the Student Government Association (SGA) executive board, chair of the SGA activities programming board, Bonaventure Hall representative, chair of the SGA residence life committee, activities coordinator for Sports Friendship Day and member of the orientation committee.
He has also been treasurer of the active minds club, secretary of the pre-law society and president of the criminology club.
A member and captain of the varsity swimming team, he has served as the men’s swimming representative to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and chair of the SAAC concessions committee.
The recipient of a chancellor’s scholarship, he has been recognized as the Student Government Association rookie of the year, as a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma athletic honor society, political science honor society, dean’s list, Presidents’ Athletic Conference honor roll and Who’s Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
A prefect (resident assistant) for the office of residence life, he has also worked in the office of admission and financial aid, as an ocean rescue guard for the Kill Devil Hills (N.C.) Fire Department and as a legal intern in the law office of Megan E. Will in Somerset.
After graduation, he plans to attend the Syracuse University School of Law to study law, international diplomacy and foreign service.
Son of Christopher Beal and Karen Divelbiss, he is a 2010 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School.
He is a member of St. Anne’s R.C. Church, Hagerstown, Md.
