Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at Saint Vincent College will be hosting an old-fashioned tailgating program as part of its Saturdays at the Barn programs on Saturday, October 1 beginning at 9 a.m.
Before there were ovens and stoves, people used campfires, so WPNR intern Andy Smith will demonstrate campfire and Dutch oven cooking.
Mr. Smith, an Eagle Scout and sophomore majoring in environmental science from Greensburg, has been camping and Dutch oven cooking for many years. He has planned an excellent array of Dutch oven cuisine including shepherd’s pie and apple dump cake.
The fire will begin early in the morning and the food should be ready for free sampling around noon. Throughout the day, children can enjoy making a paper campfire craft or warm up around the campfire. For a small fee, adults and children can make their own s’mores, mountain pies or roasted apples.
Attendees are advised to bring chairs or blankets. Registration is not required.
