Alternative/Conservative Media topic of forum at Saint Vincent College
 

“Alternative/Conservative Media” is the topic of the October 4 Civitas Forum on Principles and Policies for Public Life at Saint Vincent College. The Forum is sponsored by the Center for Political and Economic Thought in cooperation with the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government.
 
Four speakers will be featured at the program, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center Auditorium at Saint Vincent College. Speakers and their topics include Michael Anton, Fellow and Research Associate at the Claremont Institute; L. Brent Bozell, Founder and President of the Media Research Center; Jay Richards, Research Fellow and Director of Acton Media at the Acton Institute; and Nick Schulz, Editor of Tech Central Station.
 
Michael Anton is currently chief speechwriter for News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. Prior to his current job, he served as special assistant to the president and senior director for foreign policy speechwriting in the National Security Council, at the White House.  He was the principal drafter and editor of President George W. Bush’s speeches on foreign and defense.
 
He also served, until her confirmation as Secretary of State, as the chief speechwriter for National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Before joining the White House speechwriting staff, Mr. Anton was director for communications at the National Security Council.  In this capacity, he served as a principle strategic communications planner for all issues and events relating to American foreign policy.  He organized and facilitated all interviews with the President by foreign media, and foreign and domestic interviews with Dr. Condoleezza Rice and Deputy National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley.  He also served as a White House spokesman on all foreign and defense policy issues. Mr. Anton joined the Bush administration after serving for two years in the Administration of New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.  He was Mayor Giuliani’s chief speechwriter, as well as his press secretary.  Prior to moving to New York City, Anton served as a speechwriter to former California Governor Pete Wilson.  He has also worked for two think-tanks: the Manhattan Institute, and the Claremont Institute. Mr. Anton has a B.A. in history from the University of California, Davis, and an M.A. in liberal education from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.
         
Founder and president of the Parents Television Council, L. Brent Bozell III leads the only Hollywood-based organization dedicated to restoring responsibility to the entertainment industry. The PTC (at http://www.parentstv.org/) features the Family Guide to Prime Time Television, which aids parents in making informed viewing decisions for their children. Mr. Bozell is a nationally syndicated writer whose work appears in publications such as Wall Street Journal, The Washington
Post, The Washington Times, The New York Post, The L.A. Times and National Review.
 
Jay Richards is research fellow and director of Acton Media at the Acton Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he was formerly a teaching fellow. He also has a Th.M. from Calvin Theological Seminary, and an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. He is the author of many scholarly and popular articles, as well as several books. His most recent books are The Untamed God: A Philosophical Exploration of Divine Perfection, I­mmutability and Simplicity (InterVarsity Press, 2003) and The Privileged Planet: How our place in the cosmos is designed for discovery, with astronomer Guillermo Gonzalez (Washington D.C.: Regnery, 2004). The Privileged Planet is the basis for the popular documentary The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe, which has aired on many PBS affiliates in the US.
 
Nick Schulz is the Editor of Tech Central Station and has worked in media circles and the ideas industry as a writer, editor, television producer and policy analyst. His writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Slate, The National Post of Canada, The Baltimore Sun, Investor's Business Daily, The Washington Times, National Review, Reason, Policy Review, and several other publications.
