Four Saint Vincent Theatre veterans – Phil Winters, Cary Spear, Patricia Reilly, and Joe Warik – will star in “Don’t Say Good-bye, I’m Not Leaving” opening Thursday, May 29, to begin the 40th season of the professional theatre. The comedy will run through Saturday, June 21. Director Joe Reilly said the show is very funny as it follows the lives of a bickering husband and wife, Herb and Edna, played by Mr. Winters and Ms. Spear. “The majority of the play is set in a hospital room chronicling Herb’s objections to common medical practices and his long-suffering wife Edna encouraging him to do things that he doesn’t want to do,” Mr. Reilly explained. Edna encourages her husband to see her brother, Bruce (Mr. Warik), a high-powered attorney who may be able to help with his will. When Bruce arrives at the hospital a confrontation between Herb and him ensues leading to Bruce passing out and slipping into a coma. Herb decides to be the watchdog for Bruce, and Edna invites Bruce’s wife, Blanche (Mrs. Reilly), to move in with them. They all agree to take shifts to stay with Bruce during his illness. The situation becomes stressful when Bruce’s condition does not change for a month and humorous conflicts begin. “We’re excited to introduce our 40th year with this wonderful comic couple, Herb and Edna, that we think our audience members will be able to identify with and if they don’t see themselves, they might see their spouse,” Mr. Reilly said. He also commented that it is fitting that Mrs. Reilly is in this first show because she is the only member of the company, other than founder Fr. Tom Devereux, O.S.B., who has been involved with the theatre for 40 seasons.
