Eden Hall Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Saint Vincent College for construction and endowment of the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion. “We are happy to add our support to that of many others who have recognized this important project at Saint Vincent College which will greatly enhance the educational opportunities in the sciences in this region,” commented Sylvia V. Fields, executive director of the Eden Hall Foundation. The Foundation has designated $500,000 toward construction and renovation now underway and $500,000 toward endowment for ongoing maintenance and operational costs of the Pavilion. The project involves renovation of nearly 60,000 square feet of space in the original Science Center built in 1969 and another 45,000 square feet of new construction. “This generous grant represents one of the largest private foundation gifts received by Saint Vincent for this project,” commented Jim Towey, president. “We are grateful to the Eden Hall Foundation for their support which will enable Saint Vincent College to advance the academic excellence and regional prominence of the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computing by supporting the construction and ongoing operation of this state-of-the-art facility.” The new Science Pavilion will enable the Boyer School to have a facility that builds on its historically strong programs, promotes student/faculty research that is interdisciplinary, and enables the College to be a leader in the national effort to improve math and science education. Construction began in April and completion of phase one is expected by 2011. Eden Hall Foundation is a private foundation established pursuant to the will of Sebastian Mueller, a Pittsburgh philanthropist and vice president and director of the H. J. Heinz Company. During his lifetime, Mr. Mueller gave substantial support to improve conditions of the poor and disadvantaged, the promotion of sound education, and the support of health facilities and projects. Today, the trustees of Eden Hall Foundation continue his stewardship in the areas of social welfare, health, education and the arts.
