The Kennametal Center for Operational Excellence, part of Saint Vincent
College’s Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government
will present Operational Excellence 101 - Lean Manufacturing Seminar on
Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13. The event will be
co-sponsored by the Saint Vincent College Small Business Development
Center and is designed to educate those companies seeking to develop an
integrated approach to their operations. Operational
Excellence combines the principles of The Toyota Way with the tools and
methods of the Toyota Production System. With a plan for the long
term, the essence of Operational Excellence is to create a culture of
committed leaders and empowered employees who eliminate all waste from
their processes; who respect, challenge and grow their people and
partners; and who continuously improve and learn. Seminar
content includes understanding the foundations such as philosophy,
tools, techniques and the why in addition to understanding why culture,
leadership and values must precede the lean tools. Stability
includes paving the way for sustainable improvement. Value and
waste are analyzed to improve any process. Level loading is
considered to eliminate overburdening and unevenness. Continuous
flow, pull and kanban are considered by satisfying customers by making
problems visible. Standardization is involved through setting a
baseline and trigger for continuous improvement. Problem solving
is learning why and how everyone can fix problems. Kaizen and
implementation involves getting stated and avoiding pitfalls.
Developing an integrated approach is presented through case studies
from a real company that does Operational Excellence. Other
topics include learning the lean toolbox contents of 5S+1, TPM, Setup
Reduction, Error Proofing and other tools. Participants will have
numerous hands-on exercises, discussions and networking opportunities.
