SVC Psychology Honor Society Receives National Recognition

The Saint Vincent College chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society for Psychology Students, has been named winner of the Psi Chi/Ruth Hubbard Cousins National Chapter Award for 2009.

The Saint Vincent chapter was selected from more than 1,000 in the United States and Canada.

Dr. Mark G. Rivardo, assistant professor of psychology and chapter moderator, attributed the distinction to articles written by Saint Vincent students which have been published in professional journals, and to the excellent leadership of officers Tara Karns, president; Mary Rebert, vice president; Sara Irvin, treasurer; and Samantha Zbur, secretary. “The publications by our members were certainly important in our being given this award as they represent external validation of our students’ scholarly work,” Dr. Rivardo said.

All of the students are seniors. Karns is from Sarver, Rebert is from Chambersburg, and Irvin and Zbur are from Indiana.

The National Chapter Award is presented annually to the chapter that best achieves Psi Chi’s purpose to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology. The award is intended to perpetuate the chapters, to identify one chapter as a role model for others and to promote the purposes of Psi Chi.
