Faculty members Fr. Thomas Hart, O.S.B., chair of Religious Studies Department, Special Assistant to the President on Mission, Dr. George Leiner, chair of Philosophy, interim director of the Center for Ethics in Community, and Dr. Gene Torisky, assistant professor of philosophy, attended a conference at the University of Notre Dame titled "Joy in the Truth: The Catholic University in the New Millennium." Held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, the interdisciplinary conference was sponsored by Notre Dame's Center for Ethics and Culture. Almost 150 scholars gave presentations in some forty colloquium sessions. Presentations, panels and invited speakers addressed topics including mission and college identity, service learning and Catholic social teaching, academic freedom, truth and cultural dialogue and Newman's The Idea of a University.
