Faculty members attend meeting of physics instructors
|
Dr. Anis Maize and Dr. John Smetanka of the Physics Department faculty were among the 50 high school and college physics instructors who attended the Western Pennsylvania section of the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting at Washington and Jefferson College on Oct. 15. Dr. Smetanka presented a talk entitled "Changes in Undergraduate Teaching and Learning within the Math and Science Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania (MSP-SWPA)," co-authored by Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B., executive vice president and dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing.

Congratulations to Kim Shumaker (Small Business Development Center) and her husband, Michael, on the birth of a son, Jonathan David. He was born Oct. 11 weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and measuring 21 inches long. The couple also has a son, Michael, 2 ½.

“Chemistry of Toys” to be explained Oct. 20
|
Did you ever wonder how color changing markers work or how Gak is made? Find out on Thursday, Oct. 20 when Dr. Caryl Fish's general chemistry freshman seminar will be presenting the “Chemistry of Toys” from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Carey Student Center lounge. The presentations will feature hands-on demonstrations in celebration of National Chemistry Week. Everyone is invited to stop by for chemistry related give-aways and to learn a little about how chemistry affects you!

English Club to re-create historic poetry reading on Oct. 21
|
Fifty years ago, the literary world was jolted into a new era when six poets met at San Fransisco's Six Gallery to read their work. Among them was author Allen Ginsberg, whose performance of his poem "Howl" dominated the reading and set a new standard for modern American poetry. The Six Gallery reading also laid the foundations for the careers of many authors who would later be known as "the beats." This Friday night, Oct. 21, the English Club will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this historic literary event with a re-creation at 8 p.m. in the Science Center Amphitheatre.

Ladies tennis team to host car wash Oct. 22

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Saint Vincent Ladies Tennis Team is going to be hosting a car wash. The event is being held in order to help fund their annual spring break trip to Florida for training.
