Dr. Anis Maize and Dr. John Smetanka of the Physics Department faculty were among the 50 high school and college physics instructors who attended the Western Pennsylvania section of the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting at Washington and Jefferson College on Oct. 15. Dr. Smetanka presented a talk entitled "Changes in Undergraduate Teaching and Learning within the Math and Science Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania (MSP-SWPA)," co-authored by Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B., executive vice president and dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing. The presentation was one of four detailing the activities of the National Science Foundation-funded MSP-SWPA and focused primarily on selected course revisions at Saint Vincent College conducted as part of the project. Sue Malarik, a physics teacher at Derry Area High School who spent last year as a Teacher Fellow at Saint Vincent, also presented at the meeting detailing her activities as a Teacher Fellow and highlighting the benefits of the program. The other two presentations from the MSP-SWPA were given by Kevin Kelly, MSP coordinator, and Dr. Ted Zaleskiewicz, physics professor at the University of Pittsburgh - Greensburg campus.
