History of the Program
Initiated as a pilot
project in January 1998 through a grant from the Eden Hall Foundation,
Pathways to Success is a program designed to empower middle school and
high school students to achieve educational and lifelong success. The
activities of Pathways to Success complement the academic and
enrichment programs of the cooperating schools, the interests and
aspirations of participating students and their families, the
educational mission of Saint Vincent College, and the commitment of the
Eden Hall Foundation to support programs that promote educational
access and success for Pittsburgh youth.

The Pathways to Success
program is an educational enrichment program for the middle school
students from designated middle schools in Pittsburgh. Selected
students demonstrate the potential for high academic achievement and
are chosen because of their willingness to achieve.
Saint
Vincent College students serve as mentors and counselors for the
program. The college students interact with the students throughout the
school year to develop continuity and increase the sense of community.
The Summer Program is comprised of
a one-week residential component. Academic and recreational
activities are designed to build leadership qualities as well as
a sense of accomplishment and community.
The Year-Round Program provides
the students with support services by the Pathways Director
and Program Coordinator. Parents and school personnel reinforce the
goals of the program, providing ample time for homework and tutoring.
The
goal of the program is to provide ongoing support structures and
educational enrichment opportunities to ensure academic attainment
beyond high school..

Year Round Program
The Year-Round Program provides all the students access to academic advising, and monitoring by the Pathways program coordinator. The parents, along with the program director, work on reinforcing the goals of the program, as well as ensuring adequate opportunities are available for homework and tutoring.
The goal of the program is to provide on-going support structures and educational enrichment opportunities.
The content of the yearlong program focuses on four major areas:
- academic development
- cultural awareness
- community service
- personal/leadership development.
Learning experiences are adapted to the students changing needs as they progress from middle school through high school. Educational content and methods complement the goals of the cooperating schools as well as Pennsylvania academic standards. The scope and content of the summer curriculum for the Pathways high school students will parallel their school-year course work and also will encompass career planning and college preparation.
