Dr. Gene Torisky, assistant professor of philosophy, presented a paper at the 32nd Conference on Value Inquiry, held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from April 8 to 10. Titled “ The Two Faces of Moral Modesty,” the paper considers and rejects two arguments that no action is ethically supererogatory--that is, can have positive moral value yet not be required by duty--since those considered ethical saints or heroes nonetheless claim not to have done anything special. The conference attracted 120 participating philosophers from the United States and eight other countries.
