PPG Industries Foundation awards Saint Vincent College $5,000

PPG Industries Foundation has awarded Saint Vincent College a grant of $5,000 to advance the College chemistry program. The Chemistry Department will use these funds for the PPG Chemistry Scholarship and to support student lab development.

The first recipient of a $1,500 PPG Chemistry Scholarship is junior chemistry major Meghan Kolosky of Hopwood.

The remaining $3,500 from the grant will be used to support student lab development in the summer according to Dr. Steven J. Gravelle, associate professor and chair of the Chemistry Department.

“During the summers, students are employed to develop and enhance laboratory experiments that are then incorporated into lab courses during the academic year,” Dr. Gravelle said.

“This grant will allow a student to engage in a variety of activities that will enhance their chemical knowledge and their problem-solving skills. We’re very appreciative of this expression of support of our program by PPG.”

Recipients of the PPG Chemistry Scholarship must be sophomores or juniors majoring in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering, who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and are interested in a career within a manufacturing-related field. Scholarship winners will be considered for a summer internship with PPG Industries.

Several Saint Vincent College alumni are employed by Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries, a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiberglass and chemicals, with manufacturing and equity affiliates in 22 countries. Sales in 2004 were $9.5 billion. PPGIndustries Foundation has been demonstrating the values of PPG Industries since 1951, enhancing the quality of life in U.S. communities where employees live and work.
