Securing the Legacy

To this day, Prep Alumni and their families are among the most faithful in supporting the school through their financial contributions, as evidenced by the improvements made to Prep Hall, the Robert S. Carey Center, and the soon to be renovated Headmasters Hall.

Prep Hall, completed in 1998, houses the Instructional Technology Resource Center. It was named in honor of all Prep Alumni, in thanksgiving for their leadership and that of their families in providing the necessary funding to make this building a reality. Prep Hall is one of the most used buildings on campus; it is also one of the best equipped classroom buildings for instruction among all Pennsylvania colleges and universities, a trait that befits the memory of the Prep and her benefactors.

In 2004, a multi-million dollar renovation of the Kennedy Student Center was completed. And, in thanksgiving for the generosity of his family in providing the funding that made this construction project a reality, and in honor of Bob Carey, himself, a graduate of the Saint Vincent Prep School, it was renamed the Robert S. Carey Student Center.

Saint Vincent is now planning to preserve Prepster memories, such as those mentioned in the Heritage section, and more. The school plans to display memorabilia from the days of the Prep, and to tell the story of the Prep, in its original home, Headmasters Hall. Benedict Hall was built in sections from 1855 to 1877, and housed the Prep through those years, until it closed its doors in 1974. Now, the renovation of “old Benedict Hall” is slated to house the School of Humanities and Fine Arts. In addition, this new Headmasters Hall project will honor the Headmasters and Directors of the Prep, as well as the Directors of the Scholasticate. Also, special recognition will be given to the memory of Mr. William Rafferty, who was both coach and teacher for many years at the Prep.

But, this project goes much deeper, as well. Headmasters Hall will be a lasting monument to the Prep and a permanent place on Saint Vincent campus to house the history of the Prep, it will even become a center for all Prepsters to gather when they visit.

When Headmasters Hall is completed, it will form a triumvirate of buildings, along with Prep Hall and the Robert S. Carey Student Center, as a hub at the crossroads of all activities on Saint Vincent campus - another fitting testimony to the proud history of the Prep.

Prep financial support has been tremendous in the past. And, it is with high hopes that Saint Vincent again asks for support from all Prep Alumni and their families. Your gracious assistance is needed to complete this project. Your support will help recount the history of the Prep School, produce a collection of stories about the Prep experience, create areas to house historic Prep memorabilia, and, of course, restore and renovate “old Benedict Hall.” Headmasters Hall and the history of the Prep will once again be made a reality.
