Tobacco Programs

These tobacco-related services are funded by the Tobacco Master Settlement through the Pennsylvania Department of Health, in partnership with the Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission, Inc. and the Tobacco Free Southwestern Pennsylvania Coalition.

RADAR Information Center

Operated by the Saint Vincent College Prevention Projects and located in the Human Services Center in Greensburg, PA, the RADAR Information Center is a clearinghouse and distribution center for individuals and organizations requesting Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) resources. In addition, assistance is provided for treatment referral, DUI regulations, smoking cessation classes, and drug-free workplace regulations.

In 2002-2003 the Parent Tobacco Resource Center and the Parent Outreach Program on Tobacco were established with funding from the Tobacco Settlement Monies through the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The Parent Tobacco Resource Center is part of the RADAR office and provides up-to-date information on all areas of tobacco.

The Parent Outreach Program on Tobacco is an information/display package available for lending to organizations/agencies throughout Westmoreland County. The package includes a large display board and cigarette, lung, and Mr. Grossmouth models. The program is offerred at no cost to the sponsoring organization/agency. It is the responsibility of the organization/agency to schedule a date for use, pick up and return all items, and keep a tally of materials distributed.

Tobacco Cessation Services

Youth Cessation

Two American Lung Association programs are offered free of charge to high school students in Westmoreland County school districts who elect to participate. Parent permission is required for all school-based services.

NOT (Not on Tobacco), is a ten-session cessation program for voluntary students.

NOT-ATS (Alternative to Suspension), a four-week program for students who have violated the school tobacco policy.

Ten (10) NOT groups, and eleven (11) ATS groups were provided during the 2005 - 2006 school year, with 85% of students who participated showing either a decrease in the amount of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products they are using, or quitting the use of tobacco products altogether.

 Adult Cessation

The American Lung Association "Freedom From Smoking" program is offered free of charge to high school faculty and staff  in Westmoreland County school districts who elect to participate.

Cessation services are also available to college students in conjunction with the presence of PA-SWAT on their campus.

PA-SWAT

PA-SWAT, an active and growing organization, is committed to empowering the campus community to choose and promote a tobacco-free lifestyle and environment.

In March 2003, the Pennsylvania Department of Health recognized the need for a statewide initiative to fight tobacco companies in their new marketing strategy to target the 18-24 year olds.  PA DOH has initiated a statewide, student led anti-tobacco campaign on college campuses.

In 2004, the group adopted the name PA-SWAT (Pennsylvania Students Working Against Tobacco). At the second annual meeting in May 2004, PA-SWAT adopted its constitution and elected the new executive board.
