Operation Identification

This is a crime prevention program designed to discourage burglary and theft by permanently identifying valuables with an engraving pen. Many burglars will avoid taking valuables that are engraved, because such items are difficult to sell or pawn. Operation ID helps police to properly identify owners of lost or stolen property. To take advantage of this program, here's what you should do:

  • Come to the Public Safety Office to borrow an electric engraver, which is easy and safe to operate.
  • To borrow an engraver you will need to show your Saint Vincent College ID.
  • Use the engraver to mark all valuables with a personal ID number of your choice. This ID number should be in a conspicuous place - not hidden. Valuables to engrave might include computers, radios, televisions, DVD players, X-Box, cameras, office machines, musical instruments, etc.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all valuables. Public Safety will give you a card to fill out, list the brand name, model, serial number, and a detailed description of each item. This inventory can be invaluable for reporting losses and preparing insurance claims. Public Safety will keep the card on file for you.
  • For more information about Operation ID contact Sgt. Stephanie Fago at ext. 2311.
