OPPORTUNITY SVC/ACT 101 STUDENTS
The Opportunity SVC/Act 101 Program is a statewide program funded,
in part, with funds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The
Opportunity SVC/Act 101 Program of Saint Vincent offers special
academic support services to students who are educationally and/or
economically disadvantaged. Students who are admitted to the College
through the Opportunity SVC/Act 101 Program participate in a week long
pre-college program in August. This office offers support services for
these students during the academic year. State regulations require
Opportunity SVC/Act 101 students to participate in mandatory counseling
and tutoring services. Program staff function as auxiliary academic
advisors for students. Faculty advisors should feel free to consult
with the staff about Opportunity SVC/Act 101 students. Likewise, the
program staff will initiate contact with faculty advisors to
effectively monitor student academic progress.
The Opportunity Program provides peer tutoring in several
introductory courses and, in addition, professional tutoring is
provided, usually in two or three introductory level courses each
semester. The Tutorial Bulletin, a schedule of all tutoring on
campus, is compiled and distributed by the Opportunity SVC/Act 101
Tutorial Coordinator each semester. Workshops on time management,
reading comprehension, and test preparation/test taking, and motivation
are provided. Faculty can refer students to Ms. Nancy Rottler, Director
or Mrs. Peggy Smith, academic advisor/tutorial coordinator, by calling
the Opportunity SVC/Act 101 office, 724-805-2255.
