"You will find that charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the bowl of soup and the full basket.  It is not enough to give bread and soup.  This the rich can do.  You are the servant of the poor... they are your masters, and the more difficult they will be, the more unjust and insulting; the more you must love them.  It is for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give them."  - St.Vincent de Paul

Feedback from SVC students:

It was a great experience, being that we were able to take our accomplishments and even ourselves and show this to the world outside of our college.

This trip helped me take my faith outside the classroom.  We always hear about the need to serve but this gave me an opportunity to practice what I preach.

It was different experience than I am used to, but I felt it added to my learning experience.

This was the most hands on thing that I did.

I gained an entirely new outlook on how I view and interact with others.

My overall experience was excellent. This learning experience took me out of the SVC bubble to interact with people of different ages and experience.  It helped me grow...

Going to a Catholic - Benedictine college is unique to me because we probably would not have as much chance as a class to do the SL projects elsewhere.

It changed all of my views on homelessness.  I never thought I'd meet so many people who were homeless yet acted as if they weren't.  This experience also helped me understand the concept of humility according to several different philosophers I am studying now.

Its not often when you get to practice a foreign language with people who know some of it.  I thought it brought joy to the whole community for us to be present.

These experiences are opportunities for the school to help develop the entire person.  I think any course could benefit from service outside the classroom.

The Rule of St. Benedict sets out a series of virtues which we, as students at a Benedictine institution are taught to uphold.  One of those is community and by participating in outreach we are fulfilling that obligation...

I think it benefits us whether it increases our knowledge in a particular course or not because it opens our eyes and hearts to reach out and also to be thankful for what we have.  I think this could be a part of any class.
