The Lady Bearcats continued their strong start to the 2008 season, sweeping Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Saint Vincent won the opener 2-0, and captured the sweep with a 4-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap. In game one, SVC got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Maura Wahl started the inning by reaching on an error, and moved to third on a single by Jenna Bealko. Michelle Greenawalt then gave the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead with a single to right. The visiting Lady Bearcats scored an insurance run in the seventh. Greenawalt led off the frame with a double down the left field line, moved to third on an April Hawkey single, and then scored on a Rachel Komarinski single through the right side. Mollie Stock once again turned in a strong pitching performance. In seven innings, she struck out five and allowed only three hits, just one for extra bases. Greenawalt, Jostalyn Klosky, and Komarinski each had two hits at the plate. In the nightcap, SVC took a 2-0 lead in the third. Leanna Seminsky singled to start the frame, Greenawalt reached on an error, and Hawkey singled. Three batters later, Stock doubled, driving in Greenawalt and Seminsky. The Lady Bearcats then scored twice more in the fifth. Wahl singled, and was moved to second on a Komarinski sacrifice bunt. Stock then reached on an error, scoring Wahl, and Klosky followed with a single to drive in Stock. Ashley Whipkey gave SVC another dominating pitching performance, going seven innings, striking out seven, and allowing just two hits.
Offensively, SVC pounded out 11 hits, with Seminsky, Wahl, and Hawkey each recording two. The Lady Bearcats now improve to 14-4 on the year, the most wins for the squad since the 1986 team set a school record with 15. Saint Vincent returns to the diamond on Saturday, hosting PAC leader Washington & Jefferson in a 1pm doubleheader.
